Saturday, March 28, 2020 - virtual across the country

Because of Social distancing, people are itching to dance. Two events described here.

The Folk Arts Center of New England hosted a Zoom workshop with Ahmet Luleci. A bunch of Tucson people attended. Apparently there were over 330 attendees.  I got the time wrong so I only caught the last 30 seconds but here's what he taught:
  1. Kalenin Dibinde - Turkey
  2. Manastir - Turkey
  3. Inaduna - Turkey
  4. Yağmur Yağar - Turkey
  5. Hayde Gidelum - Turkey
  6. Arap (Lüleci version) - Turkey

They are planning on doing more workshops with teachers from around the world.

In the late afternoon, The Peninsula Folk Dance Council in California -- cohosted with folk dance leaders from around the US, with several surprise Dance Teachers hosted an amazing folk Dance party on Zoom and Facebook live. At it's peak there were 578 dancers dancing together on Zoom. It looks like there were over 1200 views of their FB live feed. It really was heartwarming to see friends from around the world Dancing together. I think it was probably the largest international folk dance event in decades (maybe ever). Brought a tear to my eye. Thank you so much to the hosts and organizers. They will be doing another dance party on April 11, 2020. I'll be there! WIll you? Lots of people from Tucson "attended".

Update on Folk Dancing Cancellations in Tucson

Dear Tucson Dancing Friends,
I never thought I’d have to do this, and I’m heartbroken, but I’m afraid I’m going to have to TEMPORARILY cancel Tucson Tuesday night dancing. Wednesday and Friday are also cancelled. The more I read about COVID19 the more it becomes clear that despite the fact there is only one case in Pima County, early preventative action and social distancing is critical to suppressing outbreaks. Our community has so many people who fall into the high risk groups that I think it would be irresponsible for us to meet.
I know this will be a huge disappointment to many of you because it is such an important outlet for us alll. But I think it’s better to take the responsible action now so we can all enjoy each other’s company when we can get back to normal. I have two requests for you all
  1. To avoid the social isolation that might come with cancelled dancing and social distancing. Please reach out to your friends in the folk dance community each week and say “hi” and check in with them. The Shala Club has a facebook page — which is a great place to check in and see fun info about folk dancing and bond a little bit.
  2. If there is someone you know who does not have email or facebook who needs to know about this cancellation, would you please let them know!
I will make a determination each week for the next few weeks about whether to resume and let you know so you have time to plan.
Keep your eyes on https://tucsonfolkdance.blogspot.com where I will post regular updates.
Here is the information I know about Folk Dancing in Tucson and nearby areas:
  • Tuesdays (Shala Club): Cancelled on a week-by-week basis.
  • Wednesdays (TFDC): Cancelled on a week by week basis
  • Friday Mornings (Sun City Oro Valley): Cancelled until further notice

Andrew

Suggestions for Healthy Dancing in Tucson

We're posting the following suggestions at Dancing.

Let’s keep our community safe!

1) Please wash your hands thoroughly  with soap for 20 seconds before and after dancing. Sing the chorus of Makendonsko Devojče (or Happy Birthday) twice to know how long.

2) Please use hand sanitizer or wash your hands every few dances.

3) Holding hands is optional. Feel free to stand at the end of the line by yourself if you prefer.

4) If you have to cough or sneeze. Please do it into a tissue and throw the tissue out. Consider going outside to cough.

5) If you feel ill please don’t come to dancing. We love you and we’ll see you when you feel better!

We will also be wiping down door knobs and other hard surfaces before dancing starts. If you want to volunteer to help please bring wipes and sanitizer
